Whiskey on Ice 2016 Update…

WhiskeyonIce2016Back in October of last year, I wrote a quick post mentioning that the date was set and tickets were on sale for the 2016 edition of Whiskey On Ice. Back then, April seemed so far away, I felt a little silly for even looking that far ahead. Now, here we are a month away from the event and I’m wondering where the hell all that time went. In any case, time to highlight a few highlights of the upcoming show.

On the upside…

  • More than 200 Whiskeys and whiskies from close to 100 different distilleries available to taste in the relatively unique setting of an old railroad barn.
  • Some most likely excellent beer from Surly Brewing.
  • A cocktail and cigar lounge. New to the event, the cocktail lounge will feature several of Minneapolis’ top bartenders mixologizing whiskey-based drinks for those needing more than just straight whiskey.
  • Also new this year, A silent auction of rare-ish and premium whiskeys benefitting the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing. I’m not sure what kind of effect drinking a lot of whiskey has on people’s’ wallets and purse strings, so it’s hard to say if this will be successful or not.
  • A terrific sounding quartet of masterclasses. Starting at the un-godly hour of 1:30pm, you’ll be able to sneak in two of these focused seminars before the grand tasting, thereby ensuring that your liver will never speak to you again. This year’s line up includes:
    • The Whiskies of Tullibardine​, 1:30-2:30. Tullibardine Ambassador James Robertson will lead a group through the Sovereign, 225 Sauternes Finish, 228 Burgundy Finish, 500 Sherry Finish, 20 year old, 25 year old, and a surprise cask sample.
    • It’s Flavor That Matters: Blind Tasting Without Bias, 1:30-2:30. Diageo Ambassador Kyle McHugh will lead a blind tasting of the following: Johnnie Walker Black Label, Johnnie Walker Select Casks: Rye Cask Finish, Crown Royal Deluxe, Bulleit Bourbon, George Dickel No. 12, Lagavulin 16, Haig Club Single Grain, and George Dickel Rye​​. The Lagavulin will obviously be the most difficult to pick out.
    • Irish Whiskey: Past, Present, and Future, 3:00-4:00. Beam Suntory Irish Whskey ambassador Liam Scott will cover the history of Irish whiskey while pouring the following Cooley expressions: 2 Gingers Blended, Kilbeggan Blended, Greenore Single Grain, Tyrconnell Single Malt, Tyrconnell Port Cask, Tyrconnell Madeira Cask, Tyrconnell Sherry Cask, and Connemara Peated.
    • The Common Scents of Sense, 3:00-4:00. Whiskey educator and Glencairn representative Martin C. Duffy will focus on the aromas of whiskey and will help foster a better understanding of how they’re produced and how to appreciate them.

On the downside…

  • VIP tickets are already sold out. If you wanted to be a very important person at this event, you have waited too long. You’ll have to settle for being just an ordinary person.

General admission tickets are still available. The price per person is $85, which, for this kind of event, is actually a fantastic deal. Tickets will not be sold a the door and they are expected to sell out, so move it or lose it, people. Here’s the details:
