SMWSA Single Malt & Scotch Whisky Extravaganza – Fall 2013

Over the years, one of my favorite large-scale whisky events has consistently been the Scotch Malt Whisky Society of America’s Single Malt & Scotch Whisky Extravaganza. Yes, that’s quite a name, I know, for the sake of this post, let’s just call it the Extravaganza, shall we? The Extravaganzas I’ve attended in the past have all been fairly wonderful occasions. Since the focus is mostly on single malts and scotch, the pour list is a bit more manageable than the overwhelmingly, all-inclusive list of something like WhiskyFest. Likewise, at other events, I always find seminars and masterclasses enjoyable and informative, but they do take time away from navigating the main room’s selections. Aside from the worthwhile Whisky Panel which precedes the show, the Extravaganzas do not include seminars and masterclasses giving attendees plenty of time to really explore the whiskies on offer. Additionally, the extra level of attention given to the organization, choice of venue, and even the food, always gives these events a slightly more relaxed, refined air. If your interest is at all piqued, I’d definitely recommend attending one of this Fall’s Extravaganzas, here’s this years schedule…
